Mayyur Girotra is an Indian fashion designer and couturier. He lives between Delhi and New York and is known for his bridal and festive wear.[1] He launched his label in 2009, named Mayyur Girotra label.[2]

Early life and career

Mayyur was born into a Punjabi family in the capital city of India, Delhi, and grew up there. He graduated from Thames Valley University. His mother owned a boutique and worked with artisans for her creations. Mayyur observed her work and developed a passion for becoming a fashion designer from a young age.[3] However, his parents wanted him to pursue a career in business or finance.[4] Mayyur worked in wealth management and investment banking in Dubai for 10 years before pursuing his fashion career. In 2009, he started his own fashion house in Delhi with two sewing machines and one masterji.[5] It has two sub-brands: luxury prêt and couture.[6] [7] He initially began with capsule collections and private showcases with the help of his mother, aunts, and their connections. Mayyur first opened a store in New Delhi, then in Dubai[8] and Mumbai in 2014.[9] The brand further expanded its operations to the US, with stores in New York, New Jersey, and San Francisco.[10] His clothes have been worn by industrialists such as the Ambanis[11] and celebrities like Sara Ali Khan, Sridevi, Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez, Shilpa Shetty, Alia Bhatt, Sonam Kapoor, Virat Kohli, Badshah,[12] among others.[13] [14] At the Ambani Ganeshotsav, Sara Ali Khan wore an outfit that included a choli, a lehenga made from five upcycled brocade sarees, and a tissue silk dupatta.[15] The lehenga was designed by Mayyur and used vintage brocade sarees that were around 50 to 60 years old.[16]

Fashion shows and events

Mayyur participated in several fashion shows and events, both domestically and internationally, which included appearances at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer Resort 2014, and Dubai Fashion Week.[17] He was one of the fourteen Indian designers chosen to exhibit their creations at the inaugural French European Indian Fashion Week (FEIFW) held in 2016. The venue for this event was the Eiffel Tower in Paris, where Mayyur showcased his collection, Jaisalmer. He also presented his collection, Zamani, at the inaugural South Asian New York Fashion Week (SANYFW).[18] [19] [20] [21]

Mayyur was the first South Indian designer to open the 2023 New York Pride where he launched his luxury prêt collection, AIKYA,[22] in collaboration with Pride at Google and the Indus Google Network.[23] [24] AIKYA merges western silhouettes with Indian embroidery and techniques, symbolizing unity.[25] Mayyur was also part of the 2024 New York Pride,[26] where he showcased the Ride to Pride collection at the Rockefeller Center in New York.[27] [28] [29]
