Mahar (surname) explained

Mahar is a surname of Kumaoni -Khastriya Rajputs[1] found in Uttarakhand[2] and West Nepal.[3] [4] Mahars were given the title of chief 'Thogdar'/'Thokdar' and large part of Saur valley was referred as 'Mahar Patti'.[5] [6] The majority of the population is found in Pithoragarh city.[7] 'Hilljatra' and 'Chaitol' are the key festivals of Mahar community.[8] Laxman Singh Mahar, Indian Freedom Fighter, and Mayukh Mahar, Indian Politician[9] are few notable personalities of the community.
