Abstract: "The author, a British novelist, and broadcaster, comments on social pressures on girls in 21st-century Great Britain. She begins with a reference to a planned play in which author Enid Blyton's Famous Five characters are shown as adults, and she wonders how tomboy George will be portrayed. She states that modern girls are expected to be so many things, including sporty, brave, and beautiful, and wonders if idleness and indifference are the few remaining forms of rebellion".
