List of storms named Juan explained
The name Juan has been used for two tropical cyclones in the AtlanticOcean and three tropical cyclones in the WesternPacificOcean.
In the Atlantic:
- Hurricane Juan (1985) – a Category1 hurricane that affected the Gulf Coast of the United States, causing 12 deaths and $1.5billion (1985USD) in damages.
- Hurricane Juan (2003) – a Category2 hurricane that affected the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, causing 8 deaths and $200million (2003USD) in damages.
Juan was retired from future use in the Atlantic after the 2003 season, and it was replaced with Joaquin for the 2009 season.
In the WestPacific, where the name was used by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA):
- Tropical Depression 13W (2002) (Juan) – moved over the central Philippines, killing 14 people.
- Typhoon Saomai (2006) (T0608, 08W, Juan) – a Category5-equivalent typhoon that made landfall in Taiwan and China, killing 456 people and causing $2.5billion (2006USD) in damages.
- Typhoon Megi (2010) (T1013, 15W, Juan) – a Category5-equivalent typhoon that made landfall in Luzon and China, causing $709million (2010USD) in damages.
Juan was retired from future use in the WestPacific after the 2010 season, and it was replaced with Jose for the 2014 season.
