List of longest cross-country trails explained
Here is a list of the longest hiking trails in the world from longest to shortest.
Trails over 1,500 kilometres in length
- Trans Canada Trail – In Canada, this trail extends to around 15000km (9,000miles) from coast to coast and is still in need of completion.
- American Discovery Trail – Extends from coast to coast in the USA, the longer Southern route is 8158km (5,069miles) long.
- Grand Italian Trail – This trail is around 6000km (4,000miles) through Italy.
- Continental Divide Trail – USA about 5000km (3,000miles)
- National Trail - In Australia, about 5,330 km (3312 mi) long. Runs most of the eastern side of the country, from Cooktown, QLD to Healesville, VIC.
- Hokkaidō Nature Trail – In Japan, this trail is about 4600km (2,900miles) long.
- Tōhoku Nature Trail – A trail in Japan about 4370km (2,720miles) long.
- Pacific Crest Trail – Extends from Mexico to Canada, 4265km (2,650miles) through California, Oregon and Washington.[1]
- Chubu Hokuriku Nature Trail – In Japan, about 4000km (2,000miles) long.
- Great American Rail-Trail - A 3700miles cross country rail-trail in the United States.
- Appalachian Trail – This trail is around 3500km (2,200miles) stretching throughout most of the east coastal United States.
- Kinki Nature Trail – In Japan, about 3300km (2,100miles) long.
- Greater Patagonian Trail[2] – In Chile and Argentina is currently 3000km (2,000miles) long and can potentially be extended to approx. 4000km (2,000miles). The entire route network exceeds 15000km (9,000miles).
- Hexatrek – In France, about 3034km (1,885miles).[3]
- Te Araroa – In New Zealand, about 3000km (2,000miles).
- Kyushu Nature Trail – In Japan, about 2590km (1,610miles).
- Camino de Santiago de Compostela – In France and Spain, about 2500km (1,600miles)+ long.
- The Sultans Trail – Runs through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey at a distance of 2250km (1,400miles).
- Chugoku Nature Trail – In Japan, about 2200km (1,400miles) long.
- Great Himalaya Trail – In the Himalayas near Nepal is a northern route with high elevation, about 1700km (1,100miles). The low route is 1500km (900miles) long with a total of nearly 3200km (2,000miles).
- Via Francigena in UK, France, and Italy is 1700km (1,100miles).
