The largest extant monotreme (egg-bearing mammal) is the western long-beaked echidna (Zaglossus bruijni) weighing up to 16.5kg (36.4lb) and measuring 1m (03feet) long.[84] The largest monotreme ever was the extinct echidna species Murrayglossus hacketti, known only from a few bones found in Western Australia. It was about 1 m long[85] and probably weighed about 30kg (70lb).[86]
