List of fictional portrayals of the NYPD explained

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has been the subject of many fictional or fictionalized portrayals in popular culture.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, two of the most popular American television programs portraying the NYPD included NYPD Blue and Law & Order.[1] Both programs were notable for deliberately blurring fiction and reality: NYPD Blue was filmed using a shaky camera "docu-drama" style, while Law & Order promoted the fact that it engaged with issues "ripped from the [national] headlines".
