Two people were killed in a trailer park and at least 70 others were injured. Several businesses, including a truck stop were destroyed. The damage still places the tornado at an F2+ rating because the truck stop wasn't anchored properly. Though some sources consider the tornado an F4, the tornado has never been given an official rating. The tornado weakened after it exited Athens and dissipated near Colbert. A tornado caused at least $50,000,000 (1973 USD) in damages.
