List of Ukrainian toponyms that were changed as part of derussification explained

Since Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, many populated places and administrative divisions in the country have had their names changed as part of the derussification of toponyms (placenames) in Ukraine. These changes have involved the removal of placenames connected to people, places, events, and organizations associated with Russia and Russian imperialism, often leading to the restoration of the historical names of places that had been previously changed in Ukraine's history, particularly by the Soviet Union during the 1920s and 1930s. Derussification name changes have also included respellings or rewordings of names to match standard spelling and word usages in Ukrainian.

In the initial decades after independence, derussification was not actively pursued and most renamings resulted from changes in the spelling of some placenames to their standard Ukrainian forms in addition to some limited local decommunization efforts, with many of the removed communist-associated placenames having been dedicated to Russian communist figures. Following the Euromaidan movement and start of the Russo-Ukrainian War in 2014, name changes increased significantly as the country began to further distance itself from Russia and enacted major decommunization legislation in 2016, changing hundreds of placenames connected to Soviet Union. Most Russian names not directly associated with communism, however, remained in place during this time as derussification remained less popular.

After the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, derussification gained widespread support for the first time since independence and became part of the Ukrainian government's announced decolonization policies. On 14 March 2023, multiple non-governmental organizations and other groups signed a petition calling on the Ukrainian parliament to adopt a law on derussification. On 21 March, the parliament passed On the Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and the Decolonization of Toponymy (Law No. 3005-IX), the country's first substantial derussification legislation.[1] Based on the law, placenames considered to promote Russian imperialism or the Russification of Ukraine were prohibited, and thus such places were required to be renamed. An official list of places related to Russian imperialism was published on 3 August 2023 by the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory,[2] [3] while the, on 30 June 2023, published a list of toponyms that did not conform with the standard Ukrainian language, often due to Russification.[4] [5] Local authorities of affected places were given six months from the publication of both lists to submit new name proposals to parliament; localities that did not submit name proposals were renamed directly by parliament based on the Institute's or Commission's recommendations.

On 19 September 2024, the Verkhovna Rada voted to rename 327 populated places and four raions;[6] the law entered force on 26 September.[7]

. Ukrainian Institute of National Memory supports the proposal to return the city of Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi its historic name Pereiaslav.
