In 1993, Yeshayahu Leibowitz was selected for the Israel Prize for "his life's work and special contribution to the society and the state," but after backlash from Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on political grounds,[7] Leibowitz refused the prize in order to avoid "caus[ing a] tangle for the prime minister."[8]
