Calopogon barbatus, the bearded grass-pink, is a species of orchid native to the southeastern United States, from Louisiana to North Carolina.[1] [2] [3]
Plants are 11 - 34 cm tall when flowering and 13 - 57 cm tall when mature. Corms are typically round to elongated, 1.3 - 2.6 cm long. Leaves are initially closely pressed against the inflorescence, with linear blades measuring 7 - 22 cm long and 0.2 - 0.55 cm wide, later extending to 12 - 54 cm long. Inflorescences start green to slightly purple to entirely at the base, then turn entirely green after flowering. The Inflorescences measuring 11 - 34 cm initially and then extending to 13 - 57 cm. Floral bracts are 0.2 - 0.45 cm long. Flowers, numbering from 1 to 12, are spaced less than 1 cm apart, blooming almost simultaneously. They range from magenta, pink, to white. The dorsal sepal is obovate to oblanceolate, 1.2 - 2.0 x 0.4 - 0.9 mm . Lateral sepals are ovate to moderately lanceolate measuring 1.1 - 1.6 x 0.5 - 0.9 cm. Petals are obpandurate, 1.1 - 1.6 cm x 0.4 - 0.6 cmx. The lip is 0.7 - 1.35 cm x 0.7 to 1.1 cm, and with a retuse or apiculate apex. The column is 0.6 - 0.9 cm x 0.15 to 0.2 cm wide. Ovaries are ellipsoid, measuring 1.2 to 1.7 x 0.45 to 0.6 cm wide. The chromosome count is 2n = 40 or 42.[4]
Calopogon barbatus grow in wet, acidic, sandy grasslands and pine savannas across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina, USA, at elevations from sea level to 100 meters.
