History

The school was the first of the new 11–16 secondary schools to be constructed in Guernsey and was opened by Princess Margaret in 1959.[3]

In 2010, it was agreed that LBHS would be rebuilt at a cost of £37 million as by this time the old school bad been operating for almost 60 years and, as Mr Neale who was a former headteacher at the school said it was 'on life support' at the end.[4]

Incidents

Just 18 days after the new school had opened on the 28th September 2012 pupils and staff were evacuated from the new school after a science experiment 'went wrong' and three pupils and a teacher had to be checked by paramedics as a result of the cloud formed by the experiment involving copper sulphate.[5]

In December 2014, Just 1 year after the new sports building had been opened, a fire ripped through its plant room, causing the disruption of a basketball match and the evacuation of the building.[6] The sports hall had to be repaired after the fire and was not fully operational until 27th April 2015.[7]

The school sparked controversy in 2016 when an RS teacher asked students to write to their parents saying that they had converted to Islam and to explain how this had bettered their life. Locals were displeased with this assignment, saying how youngsters can be easily mislead these days.[8]

In November 2020, a student bought a knife onto the site and was threatening students on the playing field. Other students were moved away from the threatening student who later called the emergency services on themselves. The pupil was arrested by unarmed officers for possession of an offensive weapon and then transferred to the care of health professionals once they had exited the school site. The principal Martin Haimes said:

There was an incident at lunchtime today which required the police to attend. Nobody was hurt during the incident, which was safely resolved by the police. The incident occurred on the school’s field and all other students were escorted inside. The school quickly returned to normal activity.[9]
