Las Nubes (formerly Smut/Smvt) is a multilingual Garage Rock band from Miami, Florida. The group is composed of Ale Campos (Vocals/Guitars) and Emile Milgrim (Drums/Percussion).[1] [2] [3] They have recorded for labels such as BUFU Records and Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace Library.[4] [5] [6]
History
Las Nubes debuted in 2014 with Matter That Soils Blackens which was self-released under the Smut name (sometimes stylized as Smvt) as a solo project from Ale Campos.[7] [8] [9] Her follow up, the Conveniently Broken EP was ranked 15th in the "Best Bandcamp releases of 2015" list from Fact.[10]
The project then expanded with the addition of Emile Milgrim in 2017.[11] [12] [13] After adopting the Las Nubes name, they released their debut album SMVT via Sweat Records Records in 2019.[14] [15] [16] That same year, Las Nubes were named "band of the year" by Miami New Times.[17]
At the 2019 Miami Art Week, Las Nubes backed Iggy Pop for a set of songs by The Stooges.[3] [18] [19] After this, Iggy would play Las Nubes on his BBC 6 Music show,[20] [21] and Campos would feature in his "Loves Missing" music video[22] before joining his band as guitarist.[23] [24] [25]
In March 2020, Las Nubes released a split EP with Palomino Blond on BUFU Records,[26] which saw their music featured by BrooklynVegan, Talkhouse, NPR Music, and Filter.[27] [28] [29]
They followed this with LIVE NUBES: Live & Session Tracks 2019-2021 in May 2022. The compilation featured Iggy Pop on a performance of "I Wanna Be Your Dog."[30] [31]
Las Nubes have toured the US[32] [33] and Mexico,[34] [35] performing on bills with acts including Sheer Mag,[36] Shannon and The Clams,[37] The Coathangers,[18] Jens Lekman,[38] Alice Bag, and others.[39] [27] [40]
Las Nubes issued the Enredados / Drop In single via Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace Library label in December 2023[41] [42] [6] before returning with their second full-length album, Tormentas Malsanas in June 2024.[38] The album was released through the Sweat Records Records, Spinda Records, and Godless America labels,[43] [44] [45] and premiered on Under the Radar magazine.[46] Radio support for the album included KCRW,[47] WKDU,[48] KDHX,[49] WMBR,[50] KRUI-FM,[51] and FM4.[52] Press support included Mondo Sonoro,[53] Remezcla,[54] [55] Musos' Guide,[56] [57] [58] God Is In The TV,[59] and The Post,[16] among others.[60] [61] [44]
In promotion of Tormentas Malsanas, Las Nubes guested on Damian Abraham's Turned Out A Punk podcast,[62] and recorded a live session for KEXP,[63] [64] a station which had been supportive of the release.[65] [66]
Other Projects from Ale Campos and Emile Milgrim
Ale Campos is a film photographer,[67] [68] and the guitarist in Iggy Pop's live band.[23] [24] [25] She was also a founding member of the groups Testökra[69] [70] and Wastelands.[71] [27] [72] Campos is also a volunteer music instructor at the Miami Girls Rock Camp.[6] [68]
Emile Milgrim is the founder of the Other Electricities record label,[73] [74] and a co-founder of Miami Girls Rock Camp.[75] [76] [77] She is also a sound-designer,[78] [79] and one-half of the Archival Feedback project.[80] [81] Milgrim is also the drummer for Mr. Entertainment & The Pookiesmackers,[82] [83] and previously drummed for Quarter Horses[84] [85] [86] and Parker Posey Posse.[87] [88]
