Additional Info: |
Landfall Island is the northernmost island of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.[6] [7] It belongs to the territory's North and Middle Andaman administrative district.[8] The island lies 220km (140miles) north of Port Blair, and is situated 300km (200miles) south of Myanmar.[7] It is home to the Kari tribe.[9]
To the east 1.2km (00.7miles) across a navigable narrow coral reef channel is East Island also belonging to India, and 40km (30miles) to the north are the Coco Islands belonging to Myanmar.
The island was severely affected by the tsunami that was caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which led to damaged infrastructure. The island's coral reefs were exposed in bulk.
The island is situated between North Andaman Island and Myanmar's Coco Islands. It is separated from North Andaman Island by the Cleugh Passage. The island is small, having an area of 3.1km2.
Politically, Landfall Island, along with neighboring islands, is part of Diglipur Taluk.[10] The village is near the police station.
Ferries connect this island to Diglipur.[9]
There is only one small village on the landfall island, composed only of the native tribes. According to the 2011 census of India, the effective literacy rate (i.e. the literacy rate of population excluding children aged 6 and below) is 100%.[11]
