Kyzyltuz (Kazakh: Қызылтұз; Russian: Кызылтуз) is a salt lake in Akkuly District, Pavlodar Region, Kazakhstan.[1]
The lake is located 17km (11miles) to the west of Malybay village, about 60km (40miles) west of the Russia-Kazakhstan border. Akkuly, the district capital, lies 34km (21miles) to the southwest.[2]
Kyzyltuz is part of the Irtysh basin. It lies in a tectonic depression of the Kulunda Plain. Lake Borli lies 20km (10miles) to the northwest, Kazy 6km (04miles) to the WNW, Zhaltyr and Malybay 1.5km (00.9miles) to the ESE, Sharbakty 28km (17miles) to the south, and Seiten 27km (17miles) to the NNW.
The lake has a striking red color. This is in clear contrast with the other lakes in the area which display blue or green hues. The northern shore of Kyzyltuz is rocky.[2] [3] [1] [4]
Lake Kyzyltuz is surrounded by steppe vegetation. Reeds grow in some stretches of the lakeshore.[4]
There is a uranium deposit nearby,[5] and other lakes.
In 2014 or before, Bakyrchik Mining Venture, who needed water to expand its mining operations, acquired water use permits for the Kyzyltu water reservoir.[6]
