Kher (surname) explained

Kher or Khar is a Kashmiri Pandit clan or surname,[1] [2] native to the Kashmir Valley in Jammu and Kashmir, India.

Usage

Kher/Khar as a last name is used by Kashmiri Brahmins.

Multiple Kashmiri surnames have been attached to a Kashmiri person because of the appearance of any of their ancestors in past with any animal or a bird, which later became the family's surname. Khar means donkey in the Kashmiri language. Hence it is safe to conclude that Khar or Kher as a last name used by a Kashmiri means that the physical appearance of one of their ancestors resembled that of a donkey.[3] [4] [5]
