Karl Heinrich Eduard von Hänisch was born on 25 April 1861, in Unruhstadt, to the Prussian General of the Cavalry German: {{ill|Carl Eduard von Hänisch|de|Carl von Hänisch (1829–1908) and his wife Laura (née von Hippel; 1834–1918).

Hänisch and his wife Elly (née Schröder), daughter of the mining director Julius Schröder, married on 1 July 1885, and had four children;
