Tangerang Regency is a regency of Banten Province, Indonesia. It is located in the northwest of the island of Java. The current regent is Ahmed Zaki Iskandar. Though commonly misunderstood as being a part of Jakarta, Tangerang is actually outside the Special Capital Region of Jakarta but is part of Greater Jakarta (which is called Jabodetabek, Tangerang being the "ta" of the acronym). Since 1993, the regency has lost territory as first Tangerang city (Kota Tangerang) was split off on 27 February 1993 and subsequently South Tangerang city (Kota Tangerang Selatan) was split off on 29 October 2008. The residual Regency now has an area of 1,034.54 km2 and a population of 2,834,376 at the 2010 census,[2] growing to 3,245,619 at the 2020 census;[3] the latest official estimate (for mid 2023) is 3,309,365 (comprising 1,683,841 males and 1,625,524 females), reflecting a recent slowing down in the rate of population growth since 2020.[4] The town of Tigaraksa is the regency seat.
Tangerang Regency is bounded by the Java Sea to the north, by Jakarta city, Tangerang city and South Tangerang city to the east, by Bogor Regency (in West Java) to the south, by a small section of Lebak Regency to the southwest, and by Serang Regency to the west.
Tangerang city was formed as an autonomous city on 27 February 1993 out of districts in the eastern part of the Tangerang Regency. The city was previously an administrative city within that Regency.
From 1993 until 2008, Tangerang Regency was divided into 36 Districts (kecamatan). On 27 October 2008, seven further districts in the south-eastern part of Tangerang Regency were cut out to form the South Tangerang autonomous city/municipality. They were Ciputat, Ciputat Timur (East Ciputat), Pamulang, Pondok Aren, Serpong, Serpong Utara (North Serpong) and Setu Districts.
Following the creation of the cities of Tangerang and South Tangerang from parts of the regency, the present Tangerang Regency now comprises the following 29 districts (kecamatan), tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 census[5] and the 2020 census,[6] together with the official estimates as at mid 2023.[7] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the number of administrative villages in each district (comprising 246 rural desa and 28 urban kelurahan), and its postal codes.
The first sixteen districts in the following table indicate those sixteen districts in the southwest of Tangerang Regency which would remain in the putative renamed Tigaraksa Regency if government proposals to divide the existing Regency were to be carried out. The last thirteen districts are those districts in North Tangerang seeking to secede to form a separate North Tangerang Regency.

A proposal to set up a new North Tangerang Regency (Kabupaten Tangerang Utara) emerged in 2002 when a group of residents from the Mauk, Rajeg, Kemiri, Sepatan, Sepatan Timur, Sukadiri, Pakuhaji, Kosambi and Teluknaga districts decided their combined area had the potential to become a regency in its own right. In October 2011, thirteen districts expressed their interest in splitting from the regency and forming a new regency for North Tangerang. They are Sindang Jaya, Pasar Kemis, Kronjo, Mekar Baru, Kosambi, Teluknaga, Pakuhaji, Sepatan Timur (East Sepatan), Sepatan, Sukadiri, Mauk, Rajeg and Kemiri.[8] These thirteen districts had a combined population of 1,473,470 at the 2020 census, rising to 1,483,230 at the official estimates for mid 2023.
After losing seven districts, which were removed to form the new South Tangerang municipality, the Tangerang Regency administration is planning to divide three of the remaining 29 districts into six in the near future. "We have conducted a study on the regional division, and the results suggest the division of Rajeg, Pakuhaji and Teluknaga districts", Muhamad, administration affairs chief at the regional administration said in April 2010. But these new districts have not materialised by 2024.
Former Tangerang Council chairman Dadang Kartasasmita proposed that the administration should split the present regency into three bodies - two regencies and one municipality. According to the proposal, Tigaraksa Regency would comprise 16 districts in the south and west of the existing regency, Pantura Regency along the northern coast would comprise nine districts and Cipasera Municipality would comprise four districts bordering Jakarta (Pakuhaji, Sepatan Timur, Kosambi and Teluknaga), areas where many commuters to the capital live. Separately, there was a plan to split five districts in the south to form a Central Tangerang autonomous city/municipality; the districts are Cisauk, Curug, Kelapa Dua, Legok and Pagedangan Districts.
All proposals for the creation of additional regencies and cities have been held in abeyance since [2013 by the [[Indonesian Government]], who declared a moratorium on all such proposals.
Tangerang Regency is rapidly evolving as a key area for transportation infrastructure, offering a variety of commuting options for its residents. With the current services provided by Kereta Api Indonesia, KAI Commuter, Royaltrans Jakarta, and Perum DAMRI, and with future developments on the horizon, Tangerang Regency is set to become even more accessible and connected.
The Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) service is a vital part of Tangerang Regency’s transportation network, particularly through the KAI Commuter system. The Rangkasbitung Line serves the area with six operational stations, ensuring residents can easily travel to Jakarta and other parts of the Greater Jakarta area.

Royaltrans Jakarta operates bus services that connect Tangerang Regency to key destinations in Jakarta. Two important routes that serve the area include:
S13: Scientia Square Park - Tomang RayaS14: Scientia Square Park - Lebak Bulus MRT StationThese routes provide convenient access for residents to reach central Jakarta, offering a comfortable and reliable commuting option.
Another essential service in Tangerang Regency is the JR Connexion bus service operated by Perum DAMRI. This service connects residents of Tokyo Riverside Apartment to:
Blok M MRT Station
This connection allows for seamless travel to one of Jakarta’s major MRT stations, enhancing accessibility for the residents.
Looking ahead, Tangerang Regency is set to become a significant hub for the MRT Jakarta network. The planned Phase 3 of the MRT Jakarta project, which will run from Cikarang to Balaraja, is expected to pass through Tangerang Regency. This phase will bring eight MRT stations to the area, significantly boosting connectivity.
The planned MRT Jakarta Phase 3 will run along the Jakarta-Merak toll road, with the following stations proposed along the route:
Jakarta MRT Phase 3 Will Be Construction In Mid 2024
Tangerang Regency is increasingly becoming a focal point for infrastructure development, particularly in terms of toll road access. With both existing and planned toll roads, the region is set to be a vital hub for transportation in the Greater Jakarta area. Below is an overview of the key toll roads that serve or will serve Tangerang Regency:
The Jakarta-Merak Toll Road is one of the major highways that runs through Tangerang Regency, providing a critical connection between Jakarta and the western regions of Lampung Province. This toll road is essential for facilitating the movement of goods and people, linking the capital city with important industrial areas and ports along the northwestern coast of Java.
Jakarta - Merak Toll Road has been will operate from 1984
The Serpong-Balaraja Toll Road, also known as Serbaraja, is an important infrastructure project that is currently enhancing connectivity in Tangerang Regency. While the toll road is eventually planned to extend all the way to Balaraja, it currently only reaches CBD BSD or Legok. This toll road plays a key role in connecting BSD City, one of the region’s most significant residential and commercial hubs, to the broader toll road network. As the project progresses, it is expected to provide a direct and efficient route between Serpong and Balaraja, further integrating the area into the Greater Jakarta transportation system.
Serpong - Balaraja Toll Road has been will operate from September 2022
The planned Kamal-Teluk Naga-Rajeg Toll Road is an upcoming project that will further boost accessibility in Tangerang Regency. This toll road is set to connect the Kamal area with Teluk Naga and Rajeg, passing through significant developments such Pantai Indah Kapuk 2. The project will enhance connectivity between these growing residential and commercial hubs and the rest of the region.
4. Semanan-Balaraja Toll Road (Planned)
Another planned toll road, the Semanan-Balaraja Toll Road, aims to create a direct connection between West Jakarta and Balaraja, traversing Tangerang Regency. This toll road will be a strategic addition to the region's infrastructure, facilitating smoother traffic flow and reducing travel times between key areas.
5. Bogor-Serpong via Parung Toll Road (Planned)
The Bogor-Serpong via Parung Toll Road is a future project designed to connect the city of Bogor with Serpong via Parung, running through Tangerang Regency. This toll road will be crucial in linking southern and southwestern parts of Greater Jakarta, offering an alternative route for commuters and improving overall regional connectivity.
