Raised in Lebanon Township, New Jersey, Culley graduated from North Hunterdon High School in 1999.[8] She lived in Arlington, Virginia and trained under Olympic runner and current American University coach Matt Centrowitz, training with fellow American middle distance runner Lindsey Gallo. She returned to New Jersey in 2010, where she trains with coach Frank Gagliano.[9]

On June 28, 2012, Culley qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics with a first-place finish in the women's 5000 m at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials.[10] She ran a personal best in the heats, and finished in 14th in the final.[11]
