John Mateer is an American football quarterback for the Washington State Cougars.
Mateer attended Little Elm High School in Little Elm, Texas. As a senior, Mateer threw for 2,449 yards, setting the school record for single season passing yards.[1] He finished his high school career totaling 7,060 passing yards, 1,223 rushing yards and 88 total touchdowns.[2] A three-star recruit, he committed to play college football at Washington State University.
After redshirting in 2022, Mateer threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 93 yards and three touchdowns as a redshirt freshman.[3] Entering the 2024 season, he competed with Zevi Eckhaus for Washington State's starting quarterback job.[4] [5] Eventually, Mateer was named the Cougars starting quarterback for their first game of the season against Portland State.[6] [7]
