James Russell Dray (born December 31, 1986) is an American football coach and former tight end who is currently the tight ends coach for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Stanford and was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL draft.[1] He also played for the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, and San Francisco 49ers.
Born in New Milford, New Jersey, Dray grew up in nearby Paramus and played high school football at Bergen Catholic High School.[2] [3] [4]
On July 8, 2010, the Cardinals signed Dray to a four-year contract.[5] The team did not announce the terms of the deal, but Adam Caplan of Foxsports.com reported that the contract was worth $1.84 million with a $49,000 signing bonus.[6]
As a rookie in the 2010 season, Dray appeared in all 16 games and started three. He had three receptions for 47 yards on the year.[7] In the 2011 season, Dray appeared in ten games and had two receptions for 25 yards.[8] In the 2012 season, Dray appeared in 13 games and had two receptions for 15 yards to go with a special teams role.[9]
Dray had a significant increase in usage in the offense in the 2013 season. He scored his first NFL touchdown in Week 5 against the Carolina Panthers.[10] He had 26 receptions for 215 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games and 15 starts.[11]
On March 13, 2014, he signed with the Cleveland Browns.[12] In the 2014 season, Dray appeared in 16 games and started ten. He finished the season with 17 receptions, for 242 yards, and one touchdown on 28 targets while having a special teams role.[13] In Dray's 2015 season, he had six receptions for 61 yards and played special teams. He appeared in all 16 games and started ten.[14] On February 18, 2016, Dray was released.[15]
Dray signed with the Buffalo Bills on March 16, 2016.[16] After four games with the team, he was released on October 4, 2016.[17]
Dray signed with the San Francisco 49ers on December 19, 2016.[18] He appeared in six games and started two in the 2016 season.[19]
On September 15, 2017, Dray signed with the Cardinals, but was released four days later.[20] [21] He played in one game in the 2017 season, which was Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts.[22]
Following his playing career, Dray started his coaching career at his alma mater Stanford as an offensive assistant.[23]
In 2019, Dray was hired by the Cleveland Browns as an offensive quality control coach.[24]
After a year with the Browns, Dray went to the Cardinals at the same position.[25]
Dray was hired as the tight ends coach under new Bears head coach Matt Eberflus and new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy on February 6, 2022.[26]
