Jere is a town in Kagarko Local Government Area in southern Kaduna State in the Middle Belt region of Nigeria.[1] The postal code of the area is 802.[2]
For almost a decade now, Jere had been an insecure location for Nigerians travelling along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway. In October 2016, the husband to a former Nigerian Minister of Environment, Lawrencia Laraba Mallam, was kidnapped in Jere.[3] There are instances where kidnapped victims pay huge ransom and still get killed.[4]
In May 2024, a Leadership newspaper reporter reported an investigation case by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), on the cause of the derailment of a passenger train KA2/loco 2702, travelling from the Rigasa train station in Kaduna to the Idu train station in Abuja. The derailment occurred at Jere, but no one was found to be injured in the incident.[5] [6] [7] While one possible cause of the derailment may be due to rail infrastructure vandalism, that may not totally be the cause of the derailment, according to an official of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).[8]
