Jeneration (Chinese: J世紀) is a greatest hits album by Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai, released by Gold Typhoon and Mars on February 27, 2009.[1] The album features 27 tracks from Tsai's time with EMI, along with 3 previously unreleased songs.[2]
On February 16, 2006, Tsai signed with EMI. Through this label, she released two studio albums, Dancing Diva (2006) and Agent J (2007). Both albums were commercially successful, with Dancing Diva selling over 300,000 copies in Taiwan and more than 2.5 million copies across Asia,[3] [4] while Agent J sold over 200,000 copies in Taiwan and more than 3 million copies in Asia.[5] [6] Both albums also topped Taiwan's annual album sales charts in their respective years.[7] [8]
On March 26, 2008, media reports revealed that EMI would cease its operations in Asia after Easter of that year.[9] On August 3, 2008, Normal Cheng, former General Manager of EMI Asia, announced plans to acquire EMI's full stake in Greater China, including subsidiaries in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. The acquisition would result in the restructuring of these operations into a new record label, Gold Typhoon. All artists under EMI Greater China, including Tsai, would automatically transfer their contracts to Gold Typhoon.[10]
On December 16, 2008, Tsai signed with Warner.[11] On February 19, 2009, Gold Typhoon announced that they would release a greatest hits album for Tsai, Jeneration, which would include 27 songs from her time with EMI, as well as 3 previously unreleased tracks: "Hauteur", "Run Run", and "Habitual Betrayal".[12] On the same day, it was reported that Gold Typhoon and Sony had originally planned to jointly release Tsai's greatest hits album, but the project was canceled due to disputes over copyright and revenue sharing.[13]
The album debuted in the top 5 on Taiwan's weekly album sales charts in its first week, ranking 5th on the Chia Chyun Record chart, 2nd on the G-Music chart, and 2nd on the Five Music chart.[14] [15] [16]
Hong Kong Economic Times commented: "In terms of new songs, "Hauteur" and "Run Run" are both electronic dance tracks, which are Jolin's signature style. However, they are not particularly outstanding and seem to be leftover tracks from previous work. On the other hand, the slower ballad "Habitual Betrayal" incorporates minor key elements and is quite effective. Among the several older tracks included, "Dancing Diva" and "Agent J" are considered representative dance songs, which helped establish Jolin's position as a pop diva. In fact, she has numerous high-quality ballads, including hits like "Pretence", and this album also features her covers of Sandy Lam's "Heard That Love's Ever Been Back" and Faye Wong's "Missing", showcasing Jolin's vocal versatility."[17]
