INS Karanj (S23) explained
INS Karanj (S21) is the third
submarine of the first batch of six s for the
Indian Navy. It is a diesel-electric
attack submarine based on the, designed by French naval defence and energy group
DCNS and manufactured by
Mazagon Dock Limited, an Indian shipyard in
Mumbai. The submarine was launched on 31 January 2018,
[1] delivered to Indian Navy on 15 February 2021,
[2] [3] commissioned on 10 March 2021 in Mumbai in presence of
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Admiral (Retired)
VS Shekhawat.
[4] [5] [6] The submarine inherits its name from INS Karanj (S21) which served in the Navy from 1969 to 2003, and was named after Karanja island, also known as Uran island, located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra.[7] [8]
Service history
On 3 February 2024, INS Karanj arrived at the Port of Colombo, situated in Colombo, Sri Lanka, as part of a formal visit. Following the completion of the official engagement, the submarine is scheduled to depart from the island on 5 February 2024.[9] [10]
