The genus name is a combination of Greek Greek, Ancient (to 1453);: hys, Greek, Ancient (to 1453);: hyos, meaning 'pig', and Greek, Ancient (to 1453);: skiouros, meaning 'squirrel', in reference to the snouts which are relatively long compared to other squirrels.
