Heterocycles was a scientific journal on the topic of heterocyclic compounds. Launched in 1973, it published regular peer reviewed scientific articles until November 2023.[1]
In 2006 it was awarded the "In Memory of Professor A.N. Kost" medal by Lomonosov Moscow State University and Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society.[2]
The unsigned announcement posted on its website was vague about the reasons for discontinuation stating[3] :
It has been decided that publication of HETEROCYCLES will be suspended as of December 2023 due to various circumstances. … HETEROCYCLES has completed its role of promoting the recognition of heterocyclic chemistry as a discipline that traverses various fields rather than being limited to one domain. Therefore, we decided to suspend publication at this time.Furthermore, the notice did not discuss the abrupt deletion of access to existing articles, which were no longer provided to subscribers via the journal's website, despite ongoing library subscriptions.
Heterocycles articles are preserved on CLOCKSS.org[4] and were released ("triggered") in June 2024.[5] The Japan Institute of Heterocyclic Chemistry has not granted public access. In July 2024, Chemistry World reported that the Japan Institute of Heterocyclic Chemistry had initiated legal action against CLOCKSS related to the release of the archive.[6] The details of the suit are not yet known.
