His father, Johann,[3] is an Austrian former football goalkeeper who played for clubs such as SK Vorwärts Steyr and SAK 1914. As an anecdote, he retired from football due to the fact that he suffered serious facial fractures after an accidental blow by Alfred Schweinsteiger, former player of FC Kufstein and the father of Bastian.[4]
