Gorkiye Kilty (ru|Горькие Кильты), also known as Gorkiye Kelty (ru|Горькие Келыты)[1] and as Kelty Gorkoye (ru|Келыты Горькое), is a salt lake in Kulundinsky District, Altai Krai, Russian Federation.[2]

The lake is located close to the western edge of the Krai. The nearest inhabited places are Semyonovka located 0.8km (00.5miles) from the eastern lakeshore, Smirnenkoye 1.6km (01miles) from the southwestern side, and Ozyornoye, 3.3km (02.1miles) from the southern end. Kulunda, the district capital, lies 20km (10miles) to the west.[3]

Geography

Located in the Kulunda Plain, Gorkiye Kelty has a roughly semicircular shape. It stretches approximately from northwest to southeast. The shores are bound by salt pans in some tracts.[2]

Lake Shchekulduk lies 24km (15miles) to the west, Bolshoye Shklo-Ushkaly 17km (11miles) to the northwest, Krivaya Puchina 8km (05miles) to the south, lake Dzhira 12km (07miles) to the northeast, and Kuchuk 30km (20miles) to the ENE. The Russia-Kazakhstan border lies 39km (24miles) to the WSW.[3]

Flora and fauna

The lake is surrounded by flat steppe landscape and cultivated fields. Among the birds found by the lake in the summer, the long-legged buzzard and the pied avocet deserve mention.[2] [4]
