Go! Comi Explained

Go! Comi was the publishing imprint of the American multimedia company, Go! Media Entertainment, LLC,[1] established to "specializ(e) in publishing Japanese comics for the American market, and in creating new manga and manga-oriented properties for both the Japanese and American markets".[2]

History

Go! Media and the imprint Go! Comi were launched in 2005 by Audry Taylor and David Wise, who originally founded the publishing company in order to develop and publish the manga-influenced comic The Almost Legendary Shannon with professional manga-ka Higuri You (her preferred spelling) attached as artist, as well as developing other manga-influenced projects with other artists. When Higuri You had to withdraw due to contract obligations in Japan, the comic was shelved in favor of focusing on other projects. In addition, Go! Media used the imprint Go! Comi to to localize and publish existing manga on the U.S. market. [3] They published such best-selling series as the Eisner-nominated After School Nightmare, Cantarella, Her Majesty's Dog, Tenshi Ja Nai!! and Crossroad. Licensing, contracts, adaptations, marketing, and editorial approval were overseen by Audry Taylor, with Christine Dashiell serving as the primary translator on all Japanese works; James Dashiell handling all art, book packaging, and printing; Brynne Chandler editing and proofreading translations; Mallory Reaves assisting with editorial and proofreading; and additional work outsourced to freelance translators and editors. Although initially successful, the Go! Comi imprint was shut down in 2009 after Go! Media Entertainment declared bankruptcy due to the recession impacting sales across the manga localization market in America, which affected the profit margins of manga localization publishers industry-wide. The official website stopped being updated in early 2010 and expired in May of that year.[4]

In 2011, the site was allegedly relaunched under new owners with instructions to donate to a PayPal account to revive the publisher. Former Go! Comi creative director Audry Taylor confirmed that the new website was a scam not associated with the defunct imprint.[5]
