Gloss Up Explained
Jerrica Russell (born July 16, 1997), known professionally as Gloss Up, is an American rapper and singer from Memphis, Tennessee.[1]
Early life
Jerrica Russell was born on July 16, 1997 in Memphis, Tennessee.[2] Her parents, a DJ father and singer mother, exposed her to music from a young age.[3] She has three siblings. Russell began writing her own songs and raps at the age of seven. She attended Whitehaven High School, where she was involved in cheerleading and drama.[4]
Career
Gloss Up began her music career in her teenage years, performing at local talent shows and open mic events in Memphis.[5] She developed a style that combined elements of hip-hop and southern rap.[6] During this period, she released several mixtapes and singles, gaining a local following and recognition in the underground music scene.[7]
Gloss Up's breakthrough came in 2019 with the release of her debut single "Run Me Up", which gained widespread attention and critical acclaim from music critics.[8] On May 24, 2019, she released her debut extended play, Different Shades of Gloss. Gloss Up signed a recording contract with Quality Control Music in 2022.[9] [10] She was featured on Hitkidd's single "Shabooya", released on September 30, 2022, alongside Slimroni, Alexa, and K Carbon.[11] Her single "Bestfrenn", featuring GloRilla, was released on January 18, 2023, accompanied by a music video.[12] [13] Gloss Up's debut mixtape, Before the Gloss Up, was released on January 20, 2023, and features collaborations with GloRilla, Icewear Vezzo, and others.[14] A remix of "Shabooya" was released on March 17, 2023, featuring Lola Brooke. She was featured on Flo Milli's song "Bed Time" alongside Monaleo on March 23, 2023. Gloss Up released several singles in 2023, including "La La", "Check", "Rich Baby Mama", and "Don't Like" featuring Bigg Bagg Queezy.[15] [16]
On August 11, 2023, she released the project Shades of Gloss, featuring guest appearances by Sexyy Red and Saucy Santana.[17] Her single "N.A.L.B" featuring Chrisean Rock was released in December 2023.[18] In 2024, she released the single "Ride Home" featuring Jacquees, accompanied by a music video.[19] Her album Not Ya Girl: Act 1 was released on May 3, 2024.[20]
