During half-time in the 2021 championship game against Ramah High School, assistant coach Mickey Reeves, who himself was a star athlete for Roswell High School and was later selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 1991 draft,[7] collapsed suddenly in the locker room and later died.[8] [9] Gateway Christian went on to win the championship game 70–28. Their 2022 season, in which they also won the championship, was dedicated to Reeves' memory.[10]
