The Ford Capri is an upcoming battery electric compact crossover SUV (C-segment) produced by Ford through its European operations. Set to be produced in the Cologne Body & Assembly in Germany and marketed mainly in Europe, the vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MEB platform and will use Volkswagen-supplied batteries. The vehicle shares its name with the original Ford Capri.

Overview

In early 2023, there was speculation that Ford could revive the Capri nameplate in Europe as an electric sports crossover coupe, similar to the revival of the Puma nameplate in 2019. Though the Capri name has not been confirmed by Ford, instead being named the "Sport Crossover" prior to an official launch in 2024, the vehicle would be based on the Volkswagen Group MEB platform and would share technology and design cues from the 2024 Ford Explorer EV.[2] [3] [4] A camouflaged pre-production vehicle would later be photographed driving around Cologne in November 2023.[5] [6] The vehicle was unveiled on 10 July 2024.[7]

The Capri is part of Ford's Hero Nameplates strategy, involves creating unique vehicles that stands out from each other and from the competition. The challenge for Ford was to avoid making a retro car instead create a modern vehicle aimed at the ‘Aspirer’ customer, who is an early adopter of modern technology.[8]

Design

The Capri has many styling elements borrowed from the Explorer EV, with several body panels are shared between the two models, such as the bonnet, front fenders and doors. Compared to the Explorer EV, the suspension of the Capri is lowered by 10mm and has a stiffer setup.[9] [10]

The exterior features the four LED headlight elements connected by a horizontal black grille retrospective to a detail that became iconic in the 1980s. The side features a coupe silhouette similar to the original model, with its unique ‘Capri Swoosh’ on the side windows. The rear fascia mirrors the front with LED taillights split into four elements connected to a full-width black fascia. There is Capri lettering placed behind the gloss black trim piece and rear windscreen wiper has been omitted to not "disrupt the car’s sleek profile". The front and rear lights features the 'dogbone' effect connected to the gloss black trim pieces, intend to replicate the third-generation Capri quad headlight design.

Interior

The interior of the Capri has a human-centric and minimalistic approach. It features a 5" digital instrument cluster, an adjustable 14.6" Sync Move touchscreen, and Bang and Olufsen sound bar speaker that spans across top of the dashboard. The Capri uses a new material called "Sensical", that is leather-free and it is part of Ford's sustainability goals.[11]

Pushing back the touchscreen reveals a lockable storage space called 'my private locker' with USB inputs. There are two storage compartments; one with wireless charging for phones, and another with removable cup holders, as feedback from European consumers preference for storage over cupholders. There is a MegaConsole 17abbr=onNaNabbr=on storage area under the front centre armrest, a first in the automotive industry.

The third spoke of the steering wheel features a metal-effect with drilled holes retrospective to the Cortina Mark II that the original Capri was based on and the base model comes standard with cloth seats with a vintage stripe.
