Flip Grater was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. Raised in a family that valued storytelling and creativity, she was drawn to the arts from an early age. Her upbringing in New Zealand inspired her later works, particularly her emphasis on home-grown experiences and her focus on ethical, plant-based lifestyles.

Throughout her music career, Grater released several albums, including:
The latter, Pigalle, was inspired by her time in Paris, where she lived for several years.
In addition to her music career, Grater is an author. Her cookbook The Grater Good highlights some of the dishes available at her French-styled Christchurch Bistro and was released by Koa Press in 2021.
In 2018, Grater founded Grater Goods, a plant-based delicatessen in Christchurch, New Zealand. The brand was created to offer an ethical and enjoyable alternative to traditional meat-based foods, aligning with Grater's philosophy of "ethical hedonism".[1] The company emphasises sustainability, local sourcing, and conscious consumerism.
Under Grater's leadership, Grater Goods has expanded its product range and built a strong community presence. Grater is often outspoken about the environmental and ethical motivations behind her plant-based offerings.[2]
As an entrepreneur and public figure, Flip Grater is a vocal advocate for ethical consumption, plant-based lifestyles, and social justice.[3] She has used her platform to speak out against animal cruelty within the horse racing industry,[4] aquaculture and dairy industries, as well as rape culture, politics and business.
Flip Grater has a daughter. She lives in Christchurch, where she manages Grater Goods.[5]
