Field Trip (song) explained

Field Trip
Type:song
Artist:¥$, Playboi Carti, and Don Toliver featuring Kodak Black
Album:Vultures 2
Label:YZY

"Field Trip" is a song by American hip hop supergroup ¥$ (composed of rapper Kanye West and singer Ty Dolla Sign) and American rappers Playboi Carti and Don Toliver featuring fellow American rapper Kodak Black. It was released through West's YZY brand as the third track from the superduo's second collaborative album, Vultures 2, on August 3, 2024. The song was written and produced by both West and Ty alongside Dez Wright, EJPXris, Wheezy and the Legendary Traxster; the six of them wrote it alongside Playboi Carti, Don Toliver, and Kodak Black.

Background

After the release of the hit song, "Carnival" from the album Vultures 1 (2024), which featured Playboi Carti, the superduo kept close ties with him.[1] The song leaked in early 2024, under the names "Field Trip" and "Venom". Early versions did not feature Kodak Black, who was added later, while American rapper Lil Durk was initially featured, but was reportedly excluded from the song after sending in a verse where he uses a Yeezy shirt as a doormat.[2] Despite this, Durk was featured on the thirteenth track of the album, "Dead", along with fellow American rapper Future.

The instrumental for Field Trip was initially made to be used by rapper Lil Uzi Vert, who recorded a verse and chorus not present on any other version. It leaked on October 21, 2024 under the name "All Yours". The song was then given to Don Toliver and renamed "Disconnected". It was later given to Playboi Carti with Toliver's own hook, whose first verse was reused on the finished song. It is unknown when ¥$ was given the song, as West recorded for it in November, prior to Playboi Carti's contribution, and it was later showcased in March as a Don Toliver song featuring Ty Dolla Sign. Most pre-¥$ versions have significantly louder bass, with others including an alternate beat switch and a 4 minute freestyle by West, containing mumble and alternate lyrics.

Critical reception

Billboard ranked "Field Trip" as the best song on Vultures 2. They wrote, "If there's one V2 track to bet on following in the footsteps of "Carnival" and making a surge up the Billboard charts in the coming weeks, "Field Trip" is where your money should go."[3] However, many fans gave negative reception to Ye’s contribution due to alleged use of AI on his verse.[4]
