Dolichopus Explained
Dolichopus is a large cosmopolitan genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. Adults are small flies, typically less than 8 mm in length. Nearly all species are metallic greenish-blue to greenish-bronze.[1] It is the largest genus of Dolichopodidae with more than 600 species worldwide.[2]
The name of the genus (Greek, Ancient (to 1453);: δολιχός, long, and Greek, Ancient (to 1453);: ποὺς, foot) refers to the length of the feet of its species.[3]
Species groups and subgenera
The following species groups exist in Dolichopus:
- Dolichopus latipennis species group (= Hygroceleuthus Loew, 1857)[4]
- Dolichopus lonchophorus species group[5]
- Dolichopus longisetus species group[6]
- Dolichopus planitarsis species group (8 species)[7] – Palaearctic
- Dolichopus plumipes species group (11 species)[8] – Palaearctic
- Dolichopus sagittarius species group[9]
- Dolichopus salictorum species group[10]
- Dolichopus signifer species group[11]
- Dolichopus sublimbatus species group (4 species)[12]
- Dolichopus tewoensis species group (3 species)[13] – China
Sometimes the following are considered subgenera of Dolichopus:[14]
- Dolichopus Latreille, 1796
- Hygroceleuthus Loew, 1857 (= Dolichopus latipennis species group)
- Macrodolichopus Stackelberg, 1933
