The competition, held on Wednesday 12 August, was split into two sets of dives held on the same day:

  1. Compulsory dives

Divers performed three pre-chosen dives – a running straight somersault forward, standing header backward with pike, and running straight isander-half gainer.

  1. Facultative dives

Divers performed three dives of their choice (from different categories and different from the compulsory).

Sixteen divers from nine nations competed.

At the age of 13 years and 268 days, Marjorie Gestring won the gold medal in 3-meter springboard diving at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, making her at the time the youngest person ever to win an Olympic gold medal. She remains the second-youngest Olympic gold medalist, as of .
