Derek Webster is a British radio presenter; he is also a radio production and radio journalism teacher. He presents on Boom Radio, a UK music-based radio station, and on Boom Radio's sister station Boom Light.[1]

Education

Webster was born in Runcorn.[2] He studied journalism at the University of Lancaster, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Central Lancashire.[3]

Career

Webster presented at Whiston Hospital Radio from 1977 onwards.[4]

He worked as a sound engineer at Rock FM during the station's early days in the 1980s.[5]

Webster was a presenter at Red Rose Radio in Lancashire from 1982 until 1990; he presented late nights at one point in his time at the station.[6]

He was then a presenter at Radio City Gold, which was a sister station to Radio City in Liverpool that played older music than Radio City, and in 1994 he was presenting the early show between 5am and 7am on weekdays for the station.[7]

He was a presenter at Century 105 from the point of its launch[8] in 1998. He said that at the station's launch, "[''i'']t felt like I was in ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ at the start of another big adventure." In 1999, he was still presenting at the station.[9]

In 2004, Webster joined 100.4 Smooth Radio, now known as Smooth Radio North West, from 2BR in Lancashire, where he presented the breakfast show; his show on 100.4 Smooth Radio started at 6pm.

He presented a weekday overnight show nationally on Smooth Radio, finishing in 2013.

From 2013 until 2014, Webster presented a Sunday evening programme on BBC Radio Cumbria.[10] He has sat in for other presenters on BBC Local Radio; for example, in 2015, he sat in for Adam Tomlinson and Anna Wallace on BBC Radio York.[11]

Webster co-produced with Ashley Byrne a BBC Radio 2 documentary series, The Story of the Light, about the BBC's Light Programme, which was broadcast in 2017.[12]

In 2020, he was teaching students how to make radio content at Burnley College. Also in 2020, he began presenting travel news bulletins, covering traffic and cancellations, on radio stations, for the company Travel News Radio.[13]

Webster currently presents on Boom Radio, a radio station which is music-based and is aimed at the Baby Boom generation,[14] on four weekday mornings per week from midnight until 2am and on Boom Radio's sister station Boom Light from 10am until midday on five weekday mornings per week. Boom Radio is receivable in most places in the United Kingdom on DAB+.[15]
