Delran Township School District Explained
The Delran Township School District is a comprehensive community public school district that serves students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade from Delran Township, in Burlington County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey.[1]
As of the 2020–21 school year, the district, comprising four schools, had an enrollment of 2,970 students and 242.6 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 12.2:1.[2]
The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "FG", the fourth-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.[3]
History
Into the early 1970s, students from Delran Township and Delanco Township attended Riverside High School as part of sending/receiving relationships with the Riverside School District. Efforts to merge the three districts into a combined regional K-12 system were rejected in a November 1971 referendum, leading the Delran district to pursue efforts to create its own high school.[4] The Delran sending relationship began in 1954.[5] Delran High School, constructed at a cost of $6 million (equivalent to $ million in), opened for the 1975-76 school year.[6]

As a Type II school district, the board's trustees are elected directly by voters to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with three seats up for election each year held (since 2012) as part of the November general election. The board appoints a superintendent to oversee the district's day-to-day operations and a business administrator to supervise the business functions of the district.[24] [25] [26]

"Voters in fast-growing Delran township indicated last night they would like to join with two neighboring towns in a regional school district. But their neighbors in more-settled Riverside and Delanco scotched the idea.... Delran undoubtedly will have to build a high school on its own, they said, and the other towns will have to build new elementary classrooms. Delanco and Delran High School pupils now attend the Riverside facility, which, according to Superintendent John Bodnarik, is overcrowded."
