Delhi Private School, Sharjah (DPS Sharjah,) is a Pre-K to 12 private school in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. It is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education. The school is located on a 12-acre campus in Industrial Area 16, Muwaileh Commercial, Sharjah. It has over 5500 students and around 500 staff.[6] It was the first school in the United Arab Emirates to have branched out from its parent institute, Delhi Public School.
The school is rated Very Good by the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA).[7]
Delhi Private School, Sharjah was established in the year 2000.[8] It was the only school in the United Arab Emirates to be affiliated to the Delhi Public School Society at the time, until Delhi Private School, Dubai was founded in 2002.
The school was affiliated with the Delhi Public School Society from its inception in 2000 until 2017,[9] when the Delhi Private School (DPS) Group (which owns DPS Sharjah and DPS Dubai) decided not to renew its contracts with the society in response to a fee hike, saying that it did not want to inflict any financial burden on families.[10]
In March 2019, V. K. Shunglu, chairman of the Delhi Public School Society said at a press conference that no institution should be allowed to use the brand name 'DPS' without prior permission of the society.[11] In response, Dinesh Kothari, the managing director of the DPS Group told Gulf News that "Delhi Private School LLC is a registered trademark under which we are operating for the last 19 years. This is a registered trademark of Delhi Private School (DPS) Sharjah and Delhi Private School (DPS) Dubai."[12] He also said that the DPS Group had won a case against the society in an Ajman lower court asking DPS Ajman, an independent school affiliated to the society not to use the name, and that the matter was pending in the higher court.
In November 2019, the higher court dismissed an appeal by DPS Ajman and kept the lower court's verdict mandating DPS Ajman to change its name. The management of DPS Ajman said that they would appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court.[13]
The school follows the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum;[14] it offers education to students from KG1 to class 12. In 2005, DPS Sharjah had introduced the Comprehensive Learning Program (CLP), an online tool where parents and students can access assignments and extra learning material that are uploaded on a monthly basis. Grades 6-8 have Periodic Tests and Summative Assessments, and grades 10 and 12 have Pre-board examinations and Board examinations from CBSE Board.
In 2015, the school was awarded the "Sharjah Environment Awareness Award for Educational and Institutional Performance" (2013–14), given by the Ministry of Education and the Sharjah Education Zone.[15] On 5 May 2014, the school was awarded the Green Flag by the committees of the Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS-WWF) in association with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
