The Copa Promesas MX is a Mexican football cup competition that was established in 2024.[1]
This tournament was established to improve the sporting development of the teams in the lower categories of Mexican football and the youth teams of the top category clubs, in response to the fans' complaint about the lack of development of youth football players in Mexico. [2]
However, this project was also criticized by fans because they considered it an incomplete version of the previous Copa MX and a substitute for the lack of promotion opportunities for the clubs that are playing in the lower categories.[3]
64 teams are part of the competition: The U-19 squads that are part of the structure of the 18 Liga MX clubs, 13 teams from Liga Premier de México and 33 clubs from Liga TDP. Liga Premier and Liga TDP teams were selected by invitation. [4]
The 64 teams are divided into 16 groups of four clubs, all of them organized according to geographic location criteria. The 16 winners of each group will qualify for the final stage. The matches will be played on the field of the lower category team. During the group stage, victories will award three points, draws one and losses zero, however, if the matches end in a tie a penalty shoot-out will be played to award an extra point.
The tournament consists of five stages:
The cup will be played during the months of July and August as a preseason tournament for the teams of the Liga Premier and the TDP, in addition to giving play to the U-19 teams of the Liga MX because this competition will be stopped by the celebration of the Leagues Cup.
