Conor D. McGuinness (born) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Waterford constituency since the 2024 general election.[1]
McGuinness is a fluent Irish speaker who lives in the Rinn Gaeltacht.[2]
McGuinness was a trade unionist with Unite the Union in Dungarvan, having served on its youth committee until 2017. He was also a founding member of Laochas, a youth mental health organisation in Waterford, and was also involved with Dungarvan's credit union.[2]
McGuinness is the nephew of the career criminal Cyril "Dublin Jimmy" McGuinness, who was involved in the 2019 abduction and torture of Kevin Lunney, a Quinn Industrial Holdings executive. Cyril McGuinness, who had over 50 convictions and was linked to international crime gangs, the Provisional IRA, and dissident republican groups, died in November 2019 following a police raid in England. Conor McGuiness had no relationship with Cyril McGuinness and was not aware he was related to him until a few years before Cyril's death.[3]
McGuiness joined Sinn Féin in 2001.[4]
McGuinness was elected to Waterford City and County Council representing Dungarvan / Lismore in the 2019 Irish local elections.[5]
As of 2023, he was a member of Sinn Féin's Ard Chomhairle, the party's central decision-making body.[2]
McGuinness was elected to the Dáil in the 2024 general election.
The Phoenix, which offers opinions on Irish politics from an Irish republican viewpoint, described McGuiness in 2023 as an "old-school republican".[2]
