Clayton is a city in Custer County, Idaho, United States. The population was 7 at the 2010 census, down from 27 in 2000.[2] It is adjacent to the Salmon River.
Clayton was founded in 1881 as a smelter site for the nearby mines.[3]
Clayton is located at 44.2589°N -114.3997°W (44.259014, -114.399725),[4] at an elevation of above sea level.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.01sqmi, all of it land, which makes it the smallest incorporated city of Idaho, and even the smallest incorporated city of the US.[5]
This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Clayton has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.[6]
Clayton is located on State Highway 75, between Stanley (west) and Challis (northeast).

The median age in the city was 57.5 years. 14.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 0% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 28.6% were from 25 to 44; 14.3% were from 45 to 64; and 42.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 57.1% male and 42.9% female.
