Christophe Beaux, born October 1, 1966, in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, is a senior French civil servant and a personality in industry and culture. He was chairman and CEO of Monnaie de Paris from 2007 to 2017 and was then appointed senior magistrate at the Cour des Comptes by the government in February 2017.[1] He led the mission to prefigure Mont-Saint-Michel from March to December 2019.[2] Since January 1, 2020, he has been Director General of the Mouvement des Entreprises de France (MEDEF).
He was a student at HEC Paris from 1986 to 1989,[3] studied at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne from 1988 to 1989 and at Sciences Po from 1989 to 1990, before graduating from the École nationale d'administration (ENA) in the 1994 “Antoine de Saint-Exupéry” class.
In 1994, he was appointed to the Direction générale du Trésor of the Ministry of the Economy and Finance. He participates in the recovery plans of Air France, Eurotunnel and Crédit Lyonnais. On this occasion, he took part in negotiations between France and the European Commission on state aid to these companies. It also supervises SNCF, RATP and Aéroports de Paris.
After being stationed in New York for the French Embassy in the United States, where he represented the Trésor to the American financial community, he was appointed vice-president at the JPMorgan bank in London, where he worked in the sector mergers and acquisitions.
Back in France, he was called in 2002 to the ministerial cabinet of Francis Mer, then Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry. In 2004, he became deputy director at the Treasury then advisor to Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. In 2005, he was appointed director of the cabinet of François Loos, Minister of Industry, and deputy director of the cabinet of Thierry Breton, Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry. He then manages in particular the files of competitiveness clusters, research tax credits, the opening of the gas and electricity markets and even the management of nuclear waste.
In April 2007, President Jacques Chirac appointed him president and CEO of the Monnaie de Paris, which manufactures euro coins and art products.[4] [5] He restructured the company by controlling costs, creating new gold and silver products, and developing the export of current currencies. The Monnaie de Paris made its first profits in 2008 and in 2010, company's turnover increased by 50% with commercial activities that exceeded the royal share.[6] Building on its good results, Monnaie de Paris will even pay a superdividend of 46 million euros to the State in 2012.[7]
In February 2011, Christophe Beaux was appointed by the CSA as a member of the board of directors of France Télévisions,[8] and renewed in this role on February 16, 2016.[9] On several occasions, he underlined the difficult economic situation of the public audiovisual group, calling for vigilance and asks to preserve the group's room for maneuver for the future. He insists on the need for structural reforms and proposes rethinking the conditions for the distribution of advertising in order to increase the Group's revenue.[10]
In March 2019, he was appointed to head the mission to prefigure the new Établissement public à caractère industriel et commercial (EPIC) of Mont-Saint-Michel. He completed his mission at the end of the same year.[11]
On January 1, 2020, Christophe Beaux took over as general director of the Mouvement des Entreprises de France (MEDEF). He succeeds Michel Guilbaud who held the position for nine years.[12]
