Controversy

"Being Gay" interview article

On March 11, 2013, Christine Bersola-Babao published a newspaper article titled "Being Gay" where she interviewed the television psychologist Camille Garcia, a Catholic conservative on what to do when a child is showing "signs" of being gay.[5] Bersola-Babao alsoadded her method of raising her three-year-old son. The article became a trending topic on Twitter.[6]

The article also failed to cite peer reviewed studies to back it. The Psychological Association of the Philippines noted that this ran counter to the professional and ethical commitments of the Psychological Profession.[7]

The Psychological Association of the Philippines stated:

Bersola-Babao and Garcia's statements received criticism from Filipinos.[8] [9] [10] The Ang Ladlad political party stated that “outdated and destructive gender stereotypes are not helpful and can have adverse effects on children’s sexual orientation and gender identity development.”[11]
