Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is a Bangladeshi police officer who served as the 31st Inspector general of Bangladesh Police (IGP) who served from 30 September 2022 to 6 August 2024.[1] Previously he served as director general of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). He was made the DG of RAB in April 2020.[2] Prior to join RAB, he was the chief of Criminal Investigation Department (CID).[3]
Al-Mamun was born on 12 January 1964 in the village of Shreehail under Sullah Upazila in Sunamganj District.[4]
Al-Mamun joined Bangladesh Police as an assistant superintendent of police in 1989.[5] Mamun was promoted to Additional IG grade-I in October 2021.[6] During his service period he served as superintendent of Police in Nilphamari district, deputy commissioner in Dhaka Metropolitan Police and as Deputy Inspector General in Mymensingh and Dhaka Range and Police Headquarters.[7] Mamun was scheduled to retire on Jan 11, 2022, but he got an extension on his job until July 2024 on contract basis.[8] His appointment was voided in August 2024.[9]
On 10 December 2021, the U.S. Department of the Treasury added Al-Mamun to its Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list over the Killing of Ekramul Haque under the Global Magnitsky Act.[10] [11] [12] Individuals on the list have their assets blocked and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from dealing with them.[13] [14]
Al-Mamun married Tayyaba Musarrat Jaha.[4] The couple have two sons and a daughter. His youngest son Chowdhury Nehan Abdullah will be joining 91st BMA long course.[4] Chowdhury's brother, Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mahmud, sought nomination from Awami League to contest the general election from Sunamganj-2.[15]
