Chesterton Middle School Explained

Overview

Chesterton Middle School was a public middle school located in Chesterton, Indiana. It served grades 7 and 8. It sat at 651 W Morgan Ave, Chesterton, IN 46304.

Closure

In 2024, Chesterton Middle School closed its doors due to falling into disrepair. The decision was part of a broader strategy by the Duneland School Corporation to open two new additions to the already existing Liberty Intermediate and Westchester Intermediate schools, which housed grades 5-6.[1]

Legacy

Chesterton Middle School, originally built in 1924 as Chesterton High School, served the community for nearly a century. It became Chesterton Middle School in 2001 after the high school relocated to a new building.

The last principal, Mike Hamacher, led the school. The final classes to pass through its halls were the 7th-grade class of 2029 and the 8th-grade class of 2028.

The building is set to be demolished in late 2024 to make way for a new YMCA "Healthy Living Campus".[2]
