Carpentier is a Norman-Picard surname,[1] variant form of French Charpentier[2] and is similar to the English Carpenter, that is borrowed from Norman. In Basse Normandie, the most common form is Lecarpentier.[3]

The words carpentier, charpentier, carpenter are ultimately from Late Latin; Latin: carpentarius "artifex" or "wainwright", equivalent to Latin Latin: carpent(um) "two wheeled carriage" (< Celtic (Gaulish) *Celtic languages: carbanton; cf. OIr Irish, Old (to 900);: carpad "chariot") + suffix -arius - ARY; see ER2.[4]
