Cardiff is a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada within Sturgeon County. It is located east of Highway 2, approximately north of Edmonton's city limits. The Town of Morinville is 1.6km (01miles) to the west of Cardiff.
It was named after the prominent coal-mining centre of Cardiff, Wales, due to the large number of coal mines in the area.[1]
Cardiff's coal mines were the scene of violent strikes in 1922.[2] Cardiff's shipping trade in 1912 was the largest on record for the community, with approximately 12,500,000 tons in trade. Imports exceeded 2,000,000 tons while exports were 10,400,000.[3]
In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Cardiff had a population of 1,033 living in 379 of its 395 total private dwellings, a change of from its 2016 population of 1,167. With a land area of, it had a population density of in 2021.[4]
