History

The Canadian SailGP Team was founded by Fred Pye and debuted in the 3rd season of the SailGP competition alongside Switzerland SailGP Team in 2022.[2] [3] Funding obligations were not met and ownership of the team was taken back by the league. Team Driver, Phil Robertson, announced in July 2023 that a transfer of ownership had been accepted but no further updates have been given.[4] [5] [6] [7]

In September 2023 Sail GP announced that Halifax, Nova Scotia had been selected to Host Season 4 Round 11 on June 1-2, 2024.[8] The event attracted over 80,000 spectators according to the organizers with official tickets selling out and SailGP committed to returning in 2025 and 2026.[9] [10]

The Race Calendar for 2024–25 was announced on July 9, 2024, and features new stops in Brazil, UAE, a yet to announced Middle Eastern Country, Germany, Switzerland and a return to Great Britain.[11] Notably; fans from Canada and Bermuda were disappointed to not have return visits to their countries but remain hopeful to be included in a sixth season.[12] With the addition of Brazil SailGP Team and The Bernoulli | Locke Bermuda & Caribbean SailGP Team slated to enter season five resulting in 12 teams but only 11 available boats which will necessitate at least one team being cut from the lineup leading to lots of speculation and nervousness amongst lesser funded teams and fans alike.[13]
