Boston Teapot Trophy Explained

The Boston Teapot Trophy is an annual international award given to the sail training vessel that covers the greatest distance within a 124-hour period - 5 days and 4 hours. A vessel must have a waterline length exceeding 30 feet (9.14 m).

The trophy was established in 1964 after a two-boat transat ‘race’ back to Europe from the US. It was originally given for a more traditional yardstick – the greatest distance covered in 24 hours.

The trophy is a silver replica of the "Boston Tea Pot" kept at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The size of the replica is approximately 30 cm high and 15 cm in diameter.

The sailing ship awarded the trophy keeps it on board for one year.
